Opinion and Thoughts (1)

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog!

In this post, the explanation is about "Opinion and Thoughts" as the third material in the Odd Semester. Before we come to the material, let's watch a video below.

Well, that's the example of a conversation about asking for and giving opinion. Now, let's take a look at the definition of "Opinion" itself.

An opinion is the way you feel or think about something. Our opinion about something or someone is based on our perspective. Whenever we give or express our opinion, it is important to give reasoning or an example to support our opinion.

That is what opinion means. Now let's see the structure of the sentence when we want to give our opinion. The structure is consist of the parts; "Subject" + "Verb" + "Object"
- Subject indicates "who" is speaking or whose opinion it is. If it is our personal opinion, the we use "I" as the subject, but if we tell the general point of view, we use "We" as the subject.
- Verb indicates the side of our opinion, whether we agree on something or disagree on something, there are several verb used in giving opinion such as "agree, believe, reckon, doubt, assume, don't agree, disagree, think, etc."
- Object indicates the reason to support our opinion. The reason may vary according to the topic we talk. The example of the structure can be seen from the table above.

Sometimes, before giving an opinion, we show where we stand, or which side we choose whether agree with the opinion or disagree with the opinion. After showing our side, then we tell the person we talk to our opinion. Beside the example above, we can also use some expression in giving opinion whether we agree or disagree.

Agreeing with an opinion
- Of course.
- This is absolutely right.
- I agree with this opinion.
- I couldn't agree more.
- I agree, I never thought of that.
- Neither do I.
- That's a good point.
- I think so too.
- I agree with what you are saying but have you ever ...

Disagreeing with an opinion
- I am sorry, I don't agree with you.
- I am not sure I agree with you.
- I don't agree with you.
- I'm afraid I have to disagree with you.
- I do not believe that.
- I disagree with you.
- I think you are wrong.
- That's not the same thing at all.
- It is not justified to say so.
- I am not convinced that ...
- I can't say I agree with this, and here's why ...

Now, let see the conversation example of asking for and giving opinion.

Example 1

Siti : Why are you looking so sad?
Jane : I was reading an opinion article on bullying. It made me extremely sad.
Siti : Ah! People like to exaggerate things, bullying as such is no big deal.
Jane : No, I don't think so. Bullying is prevalent in our society. It is important that everyone should be made aware of this social evil.
Siti : I don't agree with you. Little bit teasing here and there is acceptable.
Jane : I am of the opinion that no one has any right to harass or make people feel inferior. No one should have that kind of power.
Siti : Hey! Stop! You are getting too serious!
Jane : Yes! You should be serious about it as well. I would like to point out that bullying is everyone's problem and responsibility. If you condone bullying in any way, shape or form it means you are taking part in it whether it is directly or indirectly by being silent.

Example 2
Andi : Santi, look at the man over there!
Santi : Which one? Do you mean the man who is burning the garbage?
Andi : Yes. What is in your mind about what he is doing?
Santi : I think that’s not a good thing to do. It can cause air pollution.
Andi : You’re right. The smoke can also disturb the people around the place.
Santi : What do you think if we talk to him about this?
Andi : I agree with you. Let’s go there and talk to him.
Santi : Okay. He might not know the danger of burning the garbage.
